Work by Jay DeFeo is on view in “In the Shadow of Mt. Tam” opening today at Anthony Meier’s new flagship location in Mill Valley, California.

This historical exhibition explores the rich artistic history of Marin County from the 1940s through the 1970s. On view from January 31 - March 17 2023, “In the Shadow of Mt. Tam” will thread together the allure of Marin’s distinctive natural environment and Mt. Tam itself, as well as the impact of community and place on these artist’s burgeoning practices.

"Jay DeFeo: Into Other Worlds" opens tomorrow, Saturday, January 28, at @marcselwynfineart in Beverly Hills.⁠

The exhibition explores a recurring and central theme in the artist’s oeuvre—the power of a work of art to function as a window or portal, transporting the viewer into the mystery of other worlds. As DeFeo has written: “Entrances into my artworks have always been a way of getting away from everything we are confined to in an earthly form.”⁠

Accompanying catalogue with an essay by David Pagel.⁠
⁠
A conversation between Helen Molesworth and David Pagel will take place in the gallery on February 5th at 4PM. RSVP is required to attend the event in person. The conversation will be livestreamed on Instagram @marcselwynfineart.⁠

Organized to coincide with SFMOMA’s major Joan Brown retrospective, "Bay Area Stories: Joan Brown + Friends" is a collection-based installation that focuses on an interconnected network of artists working in the Bay Area from around the 1950s to the 1980s and beyond. Using Joan Brown as a locus and linked by their shared teachers, studios, homes and arts institutions, the artists whose works are included reflect many of the currents and conversations driving the idiosyncratic practices of Bay Area artists during this period. ⁠

Always looking for new inspiration around her, Jay

Always looking for new inspiration around her, Jay DeFeo found some in her dog Sophie’s well-loved and eventually deflated plastic balls. Not only did they inspire drawings, they also were decorations for her Christmas tree in 1986.
