!["For an artist absorbed with themes of vision and the apparatus of sight, it seems natural that DeFeo would zero in on her swimming goggles as 'an object of observation,' photographing two pairs and making drawings of them in 1977. Her attention to surface and light is evident in the way she captured the translucency and reflectivity of the plastic lenses as well as the deep matte black of the teardrop-shaped padding."
